How to Replace the Seat Fabric on Your 421L Swing
Tools Required:
- Medium Allen wrench or 5 mm Allen wrench
- 6 mm Allen wrench
- 17 mm socket wrench
Step-by-Step Breakdown:
1. Remove the Foot Bar:
- As you look at the seat from the front, locate the foot bar on both sides.
- Using a medium Allen wrench or a 5 mm Allen wrench, fully remove the foot bar by loosening the bolts on either side of the outer side post (the 2-inch circular poles that hold the fabric).
2. Loosen the Middle Back (Hip) Bar:
- Locate the horizontal bar at the middle back or hip area.
- Use a 6 mm Allen wrench on the inside and a 5 mm Allen wrench on the outside.
- Loosen both bolts on the left and right sides. **Do not remove these bolts; just loosen them.
3. Loosen the Top Bolts at the Bearing Extension:
- Follow the 2-inch side poles all the way to the top where the bearings are.
- There are two bolts on either side holding these bars to the actual bearing extension.
- Use a 17 mm socket wrench to loosen these bolts. **Do not remove them; just loosen them.
4. Remove the Head Bar:
- Locate the head bar, which the fabric folds over and Velcros to the back.
- Un-Velcro the old fabric.
- Use a 17 mm socket wrench to fully remove the two 17 mm bolts securing the head bar.
- Once the head bar is removed, both side poles will have an extreme amount of flex, making it easier to remove the old fabric.
5. Remove the Old Fabric:
- With the head bar and foot bar removed and the other bolts loosened, carefully slide off the old fabric from the side poles.
6. Install the New Fabric:
- Slide the new fabric over the side poles, pushing it all the way up to, but not touching, the bolt still connected to the middle strut.
- Ensure the metal flange on the outside catches the fabric to keep it in place long-term, but do not move the fabric high enough to touch the bolt.
7. Reattach the Foot Bar:
- Using the 5 mm bolts, reconnect the foot bar to both sides.
- Just start these bolts; do not tighten them completely yet. Insert a thread or two to get the foot bar connected.
8. Reattach the Head Bar:
- Put the head bar and horizontal head bar back in place using the 17 mm bolts and proper washers.
- Once secured, adjust the fabric so there are no folds or extra fabric.
9. Tighten the Middle Back (Hip) Bar:
- Ensure the fabric is in the proper place.
- Tighten the two bolts at the middle back (hip) bar to make sure everything is aligned properly.
10. Final Adjustments:
- Go ahead and tighten the rest of the bolts as needed.
- If you are using a power drill, make sure not to go full bore to avoid stripping the bolts.
